Contra and Super C are the leading shoot em' up games in the 80's and 90's. Shockingly only 1 of the many games of those two series have returned to us on the Wii's virtual console.
Release Date: 1992
Platform: Super NES
Publisher/maker: Konami
Rated: E10+
Optional Co-Op play!
Virtual Console Price: 800 Wii Points
I've played almost all the Contra and Super C games but this one has to be the best. It has a "new" birds eye view levels. Along with many colorful additions, And... MORE GUNS! Yay!
The story takes place in 2260 something. Must I explain what the storyline is about? Well, I guess I have to anyways. You go through the sidescroller levels and shoot at the aliens with spread guns, laser guns, machine guns, and other awesome additions, But I'll let you find those out .
Sound: The sound in this game brings you back to the 80's, When no one cared how annoying it was, but got used to it and eventually fell in love with it. The clicking sound of your guns will make you trigger happy and the backround music will make you feel like a ninja. If you've ever played a Contra game, It's basically the same. 5/5!
Gameplay/Replay: Running around frantically hoping not to get hit by things you can't see is suprisingly extremely entertaining, But I can't see myself playing this game for a day, Maybe an hour. So I'm saying you'll get bored quickly, But you'll have a wonderful time until then. The boss's are just hard enough to beat within minutes but not too hard that you will die ten times and have to do the whole level over again. 5/5! (again)
Graphics: For this time, I'd say they are fairly well, But when you think about it, It's only four more years untill they made Super Mario 64. I'm not sure how much advancment they did during those years. But such color! The boss's are very well detailed, animated, and colors you wouldn't expect. But sometimes you will get hit by lasers you won't even see, I think they blend in with the backround, Or maybe your just in the heat of the moment. 4/5
Heres a good example of a boss, I think this is a boss in the 1st level, Each level has one boss and 0-2 semi-boss's.
Controls: Using the Classic Controller is almost like the real thing. The plus and minus buttons are awkward and in the way. Also they used the B button for jump, Which is extremely inconvienient because the X button is shoot. I suggest that the A button should be jump. In the birds eye view levels you use the L and R buttons to turn your character around so you can aim your gun in the appropriate direction. In birds eye view levels if you press L and R together you can spin around shooting two guns at once, It's a hurricane outta' hell! 4/5
Co-Op: You can choose to play co-op in this game, Which is actually fairly rare around this time, But all of the Contra games have been co-op. The only downsides I can think of in playing co-op is that there's more guns going off and you may be confused and you'll have the opertunity to get in a tank and drive around, In this tank you can run over the other players, If the players are on top they can get knocked off and die from getting hit by a platform. 5/5.
Final Rating: 4.6/5
I'd say this is one of the very best games out on the virtual console, If you ever have 800 points, I highly recommend you buying this. It's THAT good. But I'm a classic-holic, So ask a few other people that baught it.
Pros:
+ Colorful levels (Yay colors)
+ Many different guns
+ Co-op
+ Music/Sndfx
+ Only 800 points
+ Controls (Classic Controller)
Half Pro, Half Con:
/ Lives, On thing I didn't mention, You only get 3 lives originally, But you can change that to 5, or 7 in the options, You can also change the games difficulty
Cons:
- Can't see some lasers
- Co-op (Crossfire confusion)
- Short gameplay (What'd you expect?)
Thanks for reading
I alway want to know how I'm doing.
